June 1997 Press and Photo releases

Press release STScI-PR96-16 discusses various discoveries captured by the Hubble Space Telescope's new instruments. Photo release STScI-PRC97-16 features a ground-based image of the Cone Nebula, located 2,500 light-years away in the constellation Monoceros, and a NICMOS image showing a massive star - the brightest source in the region - and the stars formed by its outflow. Photo release STScI-PRC97-17; The Hubble Space Telescope's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) has uncovered a collision between two spiral galaxies in the heart of the peculiar galaxy called Arp 220. Photo release STScI-PRC97-18; The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) simultaneously records, in unprecedented detail, the velocities of hundreds of gas knots streaming at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour from the nucleus of NGC 4151, thought to house a supermassive black hole. Photo release STScI-PRC97-19 features NASA Hubble Space Telescope images of the orange-red rings surrounding supernova 1987A and the glowing debris of its explosion. Photo release STScI-PRC97-20 is titled, "Hubble Pinpoints Optical Counterpart of Gamma-Ray Burst in a Distant Galaxy," and photo release STScI-PRC97-22 is titled, "Mysterious Fireball from a Cataclysmic Explosion." The Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a picture of a 400-km-high (250 mile-high) plume of gas and dust from a volcanic eruption on Io, Jupiter's largest innermost moon. Photo STScI-PRC97-25 is titled, "Hubble Astronomers use Lens in Nature to Uncover Most Distant Galaxy in the Universe."
